America's most prestigious occupations
Firefighters hold the most prestigious job in America, according to a Harris Poll survey of 1,010 U.S. adults. 62% say firefighters have "very great prestige," with scientists (57%) and doctors (56%) following closely behind. The least prestigious? Real estate agents (5%), accountants (11%), and stockbrokers (13%). Business executives are held in higher esteem this year than last; with their occupation regarded as very prestigious by 23% of respondents, up from 17% in 2008. Similarly, according to Pew, Business Execs are considered least likely to Contribute to Society. Just 21% of Americans think business executives contribute "a lot" to society's well-being. Those thought to contribute more than Execs included lawyers (23%), artists (31%), and journalists (38%). The top three contributors: the military
(84%), teachers (77%), and scientists (70%).
